2023 Design Trends
Coming out of the Pandemic has taught us that our homes are our castles. In the face of adversity, our homes have become our haven, bringing us a sense of security. DIY is exploding as well as creativity, technology, and a need to express joy in our lives.
This is the possibly the reason we are looking back so much to look forward. The key elements revolve around how we want our environment, both our home and outdoors to impact our lives. Trends can be rather elusive and there is always some overlap in these themes, as well as some carry over from the previous year.
As an Interior designer I tread lightly with the use of Trends since they can change quickly. I look for a common element that runs through all of them. My general feeling is that there is a NEW SIMPLICITY in our lives. Even the Elegant theme below, is a simple elegance.
Livable Luxury
This is a casual luxury for everyone in a reinvented classic. Greek key and Corinthian Inspirations with geometric patterns.
This is a return to Luxury and dinner parties. We are seeing luxury in Service rooms such as kitchens, laundry, pantry and cellars. Wallpapers in shiny lacquered finish. Metallics remain important in Subtle Gold & silver. Moody deep colors , Luxurious materials such as natural stone and marble, silk and velvets. We may even see a return of Murano glass chandeliers and metallic glass detail. Statement fixtures with depth & movement & theatrical in scale. Art Deco influences are visible. Brown is becoming more important along with ochre and artisan gold for warmth. Warm woods are making a resurgence.
Global Influence
Celebrating Diversity and fusion. One of the broadest trends, Influenced by a culture of people from all over the world. Travelling has opened and with the internet we have access to anywhere, all cultures and designs. Within these diversities African and Ethnic hand made products are especially of interest. Colorful Sashiko embroideries, Ikat, Animal prints, kilims and Wax print are all mixed in Bohemian Style. Baskets, natural materials, wood, rattan, rope & bamboo are applied together. JAPANDI A blend of Japanese and Scandinavian favors a simplicity in sculptural elements of an Eastern Aesthetic. This is a patchwork rich with cultures and patterns creating an Eclectic theme.
A Calming Oasis
A Link between wellness and organic. The home is a place to meditate, unwind from outside stimuli. Perfect for casual entertaining. This is Inspired by the painted desert landscapes and refined coastal retreats. This is the new coastal look, finding peace and calm within our homes using soothing quiet colors. Interiors are Airy, transparent, clean and light with an ethereal appeal.
Soft rounded shapes, arches, circles and ovals, symbolizing a renewal of life. Light color pallets that are serene and calming dusty colors. Natural materials are key elements to create this serenity. Effortless sophistication, but not over the top fixtures. We are moving away from the open concept floor plan. In a need for isolated corners for working or calm. The term Bunkering; making home a safe-haven. This leads to creating flex spaces and a need for more storage. Private social clubs for hospitality and In home movie theaters will be resurrected.
Organic Modern
Based on Calming Oasis. We Idealize nature and want to connect with it, by surrounding ourselves with natural materials. Au natural, biophilic inspired modern interiors with earthy colors and Natural materials. Texture permeates throughout the home with jute, wicker, raffia, marble and wood tones. Artfully created lighting featuring sculptural shapes and interesting textures. Eschewing uniformity and structure, opposites attract; shine versus dull. Craftsmanship and a degree of irregularities celebrates nature in its pure state.
Retro Futurism
The ongoing Nostalgia for all things retro taps into the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Making us feel like we are in a time machine. A Mix of old and new ,Chick retro moments combine check patterns , black and white and fun colors. Spaces emote joy and creativity. The YOLO generation is pushing the limits. This new direction pairs Retro with future elements, such as digital art.
Gothic inspiration is back, and black is the new neutral.
Technology moves at light speed, with online shopping & tech driven homes . Innovation in design can mean incorporating motion in light fixtures to create an experience. Bright neon colors, powder coated metal, laser cut accents & Lucite. Geometric shapes & floral patterns add sophistication and whimsy to a room. Back to the Future is now more right than ever.
Modern Ranch
A fresh look at refining both the Industrial and Farmhouse Style. A softer, brighter natural environment design keeps the look clean and simple.
From the landscapes weathered materials. Knotty Alder, pine or maple the beauty of wood reclaims its place in the home. Natural stone, iron and glass modernizes the Industrial Age. Americana references inspired by popular TV series are on the horizon with Birch Bark and Hand- Poured whiskey & tobacco candles , leather chairs and Kilim Rugs.. a slow transition from Rustic to Modern and back again.
